I truly believe that understanding our attachment style is the key to healing and growth in parenting and relationships. My mission through Secure Starts for Families is to foster a respectful and empowering environment where parents can reflect on how they experience love and connection, with the purpose of connecting with their children and building stronger attachments. Why? Because secure children now, means happier, and more confident, adults and parents of the next generation.
What is secure attachment?
Attachment refers to the emotional bond that forms between a child and their primary caregiver. Feelings of security, trust, and comfort are the foundation for the child's emotional and social development.
Attachment theory, pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby (1969), suggests that the quality of early attachments profoundly influences an individual's later relationships and emotional well-being. As babies, we are born seeking connection and safety from our caregivers, this is a primal instinct necessary for survival. We go on to develop strong emotions and complex needs that we can’t possibly understand, we need a trusting adult to guide us as we explore the world and learn to interact with others. Research shows us again and again, that a child who has their needs met with compassion and a parent to help make sense of their feelings, will grow up with the foundations of a secure attachment.
Attachment continues to influence relationships throughout life and how we view the world as adults. Secure attachment promotes resilience, empathy, and the ability to form fulfilling connections with others.
